My approach to counselling

I hold a bachelors degree in Counselling and I am registered with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors, abiding by their code of ethics.

As a counsellor I am down to earth, culturally sensitive and client centred. I strive to create open and collaborative relationships that support meaningful change and validate the experiences of the clients that I am privileged to support. I also aim to normalise difficult times as a natural part of being human, and reframe them as things that we can learn and grow from, rather than things that define or limit us.

I take a pluralistic approach to counselling which may include:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Person Centred Therapy

  • Creative and Expressive Approaches

  • Psycho Education

  • Gestalt Therapy

  • Motivational Interviewing

Above all, research suggests that the therapeutic relationship provides 70% of the success in counselling. Therefore, along with providing tools, coping strategies and other things you might typically associate with counselling, I also place high value on the therapeutic relationship and building rapport, trust and relatability.

Counselling is $100.00 per session and will be billed via invoice. I ask for payment within 3 days of our session unless other arrangements have been made.

Funding options

I am registered with Work and Income (WINZ), Victim Support, Abuse in State Care and the Ministry of Social Development, which can all be potential sources of funding for eligible people. If you think that this applies to you, please contact the organisation to request funding for counselling.

Cancellation policy

Please let me know at least 24 hours before our session if you intend to cancel. I reserve the right to charge 50% of our session fee otherwise. The reason for this is because I pay a fee in advance to book my counselling room, and because I spend time before our session doing admin work and planning to ensure that the session I have with you, is relevant and helpful.

Of course I understand that extenuating circumstances can occur, and this will be considered before charging a cancellation fee if necessary.

"When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity-then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship offered by an empathic person… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another".
